As i said, you can't use animated gifs, but you can save the individual frames as separate textures, and cycle through an array of those textures: Obviously native video playback would be preferable over gif. Then i took the original gif and used ati avivo encoder to save as 5.24mb h264 file and a 2.59mb wmv9 file. I think one of the samples shows an animated gif.
